Semana Santa Cuevas de Almanzora

Officially Declared of Tourist Interest in 2003

During this festive week, Cuevas del Almanzora becomes a town which lives and represents the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ in an unforgettable way.

A Blast from the Past: Enjoy and Experience Traditions in Cuevas del Almanzora

Held annually and religiously, these traditional processions mark the celebration of the Passion Week. Holy Week in Cuevas del Almanzora is not only a living example of popular religiosity, but also a series of liturgical and cultural celebrations. Above all, it is a way of understanding, feeling and experiencing the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ.

It is a meeting point for many locals who are out of town throughout the year and take advantage of this time to reconnect with their past, as well as for the many tourists who come to live the experience of discovering and enjoying Holy Week in or town.

Documents in the parish archives of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación indicate that the origin of this tradition dates back to 1505 (approximately), during the Marquisate of Los Vélez.

Origins and History of the Holy Week in Cuevas del Almanzora

In its origins, the concept of establishing and organising corresponds to two specific realities: assisting those in need and helping members of a guild or trade. Thus, two types of brotherhoods emerged: charitable and trade-based.

In the case of Cuevas del Almanzora, it is believed that the first brotherhoods were established purely for reasons of mutual aid and hospitality towards the community.
