Our Church

Our church plays a very important role in the Holy Week of Cuevas del Almanzora. Currently, it is the subject of an ambitious restoration project, whose history dates back to the end of the Reconquest.

Nuestra Señora De La Encarnación Church

It was constructed on 26th May 1505 by Fray Diego de Deza, Archbishop of Seville, but it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1518. The construction of the current building began in 1753 and ended in 1762. The project was promoted by the Marquis of Los Vélez.

It is a building that combines late Baroque and Neoclassical styles. The ground floor has a Latin cross and consists of three naves, in which the main one is covered by a half-barrel vault and supported by transverse arches. The transept is covered by a semicircular dome supported by pilasters. Above the chancel, there is an apse with a series of frescoes, including one which depicts the mystery of the incarnation and others dealing with theological virtues.

The main altar is presided over a bronze marble tabernacle, which includes a marble balustrade. The frontispiece is decorated with a bas-relief representing the Last Supper, carved in Macael marble. The baptistery is separated by a marble-balustrade, in the centre of which is the monumental baptismal font, a unique piece carved and decorated from a large block of Macael marble.

Within the parish church itself, the chapel of the Virgen del Carmen (patron saint of Cuevas del Almanzora) stands out. It was funded entirely by the Sociedad Minera Carmen y Consortes.  The design and management of this chapel was entrusted to Mr Antonio Falces Yesares and it was finally inaugurated in 1854. It has an oval floor plan and features an elliptical dome. This chapel is connected to the church by an iron gate, created by the master craftsman Esparó.
